He was a finalist in a number of competitions including the Young Texas Artist competition, Rosen-Schaffel Competition, UNCSA Fall Concerti Competition, Rafa Artist Competition, Raleigh Symphony Orchestra competition, SEMFA Young Artist Competition, and the Osaka International competition.

His performance of the Nielsen concerto with orchestra has been reviewed as, “exuded professionalism, poise, technical mastery, and interpretive excellence throughout his impressive performance,” by the Classical Voice of North Carolina. Hyunsu has chosen music theory for his related-field in his DMA studies. He approaches music theory with special emphasis on flute pedagogy. He has had three years of university-level experience teaching undergraduate students, both in a group classroom setting and in private lessons, and has taught the flute at various levels, from beginners to advanced, to both flute majors and non-majors as a full time teaching fellow. Hyunsu particularly enjoys teaching music literature at the local college as well as music theory to students preparing for the ABRSM theory examinations. As much as he has passion for teaching the flute, he emphasizes the value of historical and theoretical aspects of music to inform and guide his students.

Hyunsu currently works with Mary Karen Clardy at University of North Texas. His previous teachers are Amy Porter, Erika Boysen, Tadeu Coelho and Hiroshi Matsushima.
